Gili Meno — the turtle island
Meno is the smallest and quietest of the three Gilis, and home to Turtle Point — a shallow reef on the east coast where green sea turtles feed almost every day. You can also swim above Nest, the famous ring of underwater human statues by Jason deCaires Taylor (technically off Gili Meno, west side).
- Best for: swimming with turtles, the underwater statues.
- Visibility: 10 to 20 m most of the year.
- Difficulty: easy, shallow.
Gili Air — the best coral
Air has the healthiest live coral of the three islands. The north-east reef drops off close to shore and is full of damselfish, parrotfish and the occasional reef shark. Calmer waters and fewer crowds make it perfect for beginners and families.
- Best for: coral gardens, beginners, easy beach entry.
- Visibility: 15 to 25 m.
- Difficulty: very easy.
Gili Trawangan — the busy reef
Trawangan’s house reef on the north and north-east is good but heavily visited. It’s the most convenient if you’re staying on Trawangan and want to snorkel from the beach. For the better spots (Shark Point, Deep Turbo) you’ll want a boat.
- Best for: easy access if you stay on Trawangan, sunset snorkels.
- Visibility: 10 to 20 m.
- Difficulty: easy near shore, currents pick up further out.
